Another use is for an OS package manager to present an option to “run
the included test suite when installing this package”, to catch problems
early when installing on a new system.
Debian is one OS (there may be others) which is working toward
standardising this capability. This will increase the motivation to
install the test suite along with the rest of the package, and so it
will be good to discuss conventions for where they should be stored and
installed.
