I've always answered this question with one word: confidence. Way back
in 2009 at the first TiP BoF I did a lightning talk on the testing
pyramid which I stole from Jason Huggins (I think he stole it from
Mike Cohn). The basic concept is that the more testing you do the more
confident your team can be when you release new features for the
software.
