AFAIK Venus is a fork of Planet, written in Python, and happened because
the original maintainer of Planet was too busy.  I'm making it sound
worse than it is: it was a very friendly fork, and, I believe, jdub
wants to take Venus and declare it to be the next official version of
Planet, if he ever finds the time.
