Hi folks,

here's a course offered by some colleagues at MSU. It includes some
bioinformatics as well as wet lab work.

MICROBIAL METAGENOMICS

http://metagenomics.wikidot.com/
Sunday June 3th - Saturday June 16th, 2012
Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA

This intensive two-week course provides hands-on experience with some
molecular and computational tools that can be used to study relationships
between microbial communities and ecosystem functions. During the course
you will apply them to questions you formulate about denitrifying bacteria
and the production of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide at Kellogg
Biological Station (http://lter.kbs.msu.edu).

Morning lectures will discuss microbial and ecological principles.
Afternoon wet lab sessions will include purification of DNA from soils and
their preparation for sequencing and qPCR. In the computer lab you will
analyze your sequence data with a suite of contemporary programs to
measure community diversity, and use multivariate statistics to relate the
structures of these communities to functions. The primary instructors are
Tom Schmidt, Clegg Waldron & Jay Lennon. Specialists from MSU and
elsewhere will also participate.

The course is for about 20 graduate students, postdocs and faculty. We
encourage diversity of backgrounds. The primary pre-requisite is a keen
interest in adding metagenomic methods to your research.

Additional information and Application Forms are available at
http://metagenomics.wikidot.com/. The deadline for full consideration is
March 16th 2012.
