=================

Hello all,

This summer's Eminent Ecologists series begins next week. Our first
speaker will be Joel Brown, of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr.
Brown is an evolutionary ecologist who studies how 'natural selection
acting as an optimization process determines feeding behaviors, population
characteristics, and the properties of communities' (from his website). His
work is remarkably broad, integrating mathematical modelling of selective
processes with empirical studies in a number of systems, among them
squirrels, owls, gerbils, snow leopards and plants. You can find more
information about his research at his website,
http://www.uic.edu/labs/squirrel/brown/ .

Here's a quick summary of the major events of the week:

 * *Monday, June 11th*: Seminar titled "Not your grandfather's ESS:
    From behaviors to niche co-evolution"
 * ***Wednesday, June 13th*: Seminar titled "Applications: Plants,
   competition and predator-prey foraging games"
 * ***Thursday, June 14th*: _Reception at Tom Getty's residence_**(maps
   will be placed in the mail room)

All seminars will take place in the *KBS auditorium *at *7:30 p.m*.

Dr. Brown will be available to meet with between Monday and Friday. If you
would like to schedule a meeting, you can reserve a slot using the signup
sheet posted on the library door.

More details about the Eminent Ecologists series can be found at the
