You are receiving this because you are enrolled either in the Analysis of Next
generation Sequencing data course or the MSU software carpentry Bootcamp. We
wanted to give you information on a highly recommended text that will make your
life easier, not just for the course, but in general!

For the courses we recommend "Practical Computing for Biologists" By Steven
Haddock and Casey Dunn. More information about this book can be found at its
website:

http://practicalcomputing.org/

Essentially this will go over the basics of life at the Unix shell up to and
including shell scripting, regular expressions and the fundamentals of
programming in python (which is what we will use). There is a lot more in
there, but that is the basics. The students last year really found this
helpful, so we thought we would suggest it to you in case you want to get
started

The publisher, Sinauer is offering a 20% discount off the price of the book
(list price 59.95, discount is 47.96) with free shipping in the US. However
after April 30th the discount goes to 15%.

Amazon is selling it currently for $50.31 (with free shipping domestically).

We are offering special pricing at our website through the end of April.
On May 1, our prices will change and the 20% online discount will change to
a 15% discount. We now offer free shipping to domestic addresses, via UPS
ground. All of this is new since the last time you ordered with us, so the
landscape has changed a bit. If you have questions about credit card
orders, please address them to Debbie Bennett (copied above). Although Deb
is out of the office today and tomorrow, she will return on Wednesday and
can assist you by phone or email at that time.****

We use Google Check-out, so any student with a credit card can receive this
discount by ordering from our website. Hope this is helpful! Let me know
if you have further questions that need immediate answers prior to
Wednesday and I will get answers for you.****

All best,****

p.s. the book is now available as a CourseSmart eBook, if that is of
