progress in port to gcc 3.1.

* all sources compile under gcc 3.1 and 2.96.
* Qt3 is not yet ready for gcc 3.1, so qt-viewer's gcc 3.1 build is
untested.

Note than most source files were altered, so...

find significant bugs.
