</a></u></font><font face="Arial, Helvetica">The First Australian
Conference on Artificial Life, (ACAL2003), will be held in Canberra, 6-7
December 2003. <br><br>
"Artificial Life" (Alife) is used to delineate systems that
exhibit some properties of life. Research in Alife ranges from analysing
and understanding life and nature - at least as we may believe it is - to
modelling biological systems or solving biological problems. Alife is a
large interdisciplinary research area covering research from computer
science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, sociology, and
psychology.<br><br>
The location will be the University of New South Wales at the Australian
Defence Force Academy in Canberra, Australia.<br><br>
ACAL2003 warmly invites doctoral students to apply for the first ACAL PhD
Consortium. The Consortium provides doctoral students with an opportunity
to discuss their study with other students and researchers.<br><br>
The aim of the Consortium is to nurture the research of doctoral
students:<br>

increasing participants' awareness of other research in Artificial Life
and relevant fields;<br>
</font><font face="Symbol"><x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Symbol" size=4>·<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Arial, Helvetica">By
providing an opportunity for participants to share their research with
others;<br>
</font><font face="Symbol"><x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Symbol" size=4>·<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Arial, Helvetica">By
providing participants with feedback on their research from other
participants and researchers; and<br>
</font><font face="Symbol"><x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Symbol" size=4>·<x-tab> </x-tab></font><font face="Arial, Helvetica">By
providing an opportunity for participants to discuss the PhD
Process.<br><br>
Students who wish to be involved in the PhD Consortium should initially
email the consortium organisers at

with an expression of interest before July 31, 2003.<br><br>
Subsequent to an expression of interest, all students are expected to
submit a proposal for the Consortium, which will be a 2-page summary of
their PhD topic. All proposals are due October 31, 2003. All accepted
proposals will be distributed to ACAL attendees.<br><br>
If accepted, students will give a brief presentation of their research
during one of the sessions at ACAL2003.<br><br>
A panel of judges will award a certificate to the author of the best
student paper to acknowledge his/her achievement.<br><br>
