GENERAL AIM
--------------------
Next generation of Human-Centred Robotic Systems will coexist harmoniously with people in composite environments. This requires the design of novel autonomous cognitive systems that are able to develop a level of cognition and motor intelligence that will provide autonomy in any environment (household or industrial), effective interaction with humans, and adaptation of their actions to an ever-growing range of open, dynamic situations. These artificial cognitive systems will be able to reason, behave and interact in a human-like fashion and develop the ability to function effectively in circumstances not explicitly planned when the system was designed. They are expected to be able to learn and predict perceptual and functional changes, that result as a consequence of human actions, and replicate human activities taking into consideration their own capabilities and limitations. This ability makes it especially suited to control complex systems, such as robots, which are designed to provide services and proactively interact with people.
The aim of this special issue is to collect innovative research and developments investigating all the aspects of modelling and applying Cognitive Agents and Robots in Human-Centric environments, such as novel engineering principles, models and applications of cybernetic systems capable to autonomously progress their capabilities in an open-ended process while socially interacting with human beings or with other artificial agents in a real environment to benefit humans.

TOPICS OF INTERESTS
--------------------
A focus on developmental aspects of cognition, broadly conceived, and highly interdisciplinary research works are especially encouraged. We would like to collect work drawing on knowledge from artificial intelligence, psychology, sociology, neuroscience, robot engineering, and related domains. In particular, we encourage submissions on neural computation and cognitive robotics models of sensorimotor, cognitive and social development inspired by our understanding of human development. These include evolutionary and developmental models of the origins of intrinsic motivation, perceptual and motor development, social learning and interaction, imitation, acquisition of communicative and linguistic skills, and reasoning.
   The special issue particularly welcomes all the contributions in the area of Artificial Cognitive Systems applied to human-centric environments, with particular interest (but not limited to) the following topics:
* The development of perceptual, motor, cognitive, emotional, social, and communication skills in artificial systems and robots
* Computational models of human cognition and interaction
* Engineering applications of Developing Cognitive Systems
* Use of robots in applied human-centred settings
* Epistemological foundations and philosophical issues.
