The Levin lab at Tufts University (www.drmichaellevin.org) has an open
post-doctoral research fellow position available at the boundary of
regenerative biology and computation.

This project involves applying techniques from the information sciences
(including Artificial Life, Computational Neuroscience, etc.) to the
understanding of complex biological pattern formation during embryogenesis
and organ regeneration. We are looking for someone with strong experience
in areas such as connectionist models (PDP, Kohonen nets, deep networks)
and other formalisms from cybernetics, group cognition, and unconventional
computing. The goal will be to develop new ways to model the information
processing that occurs during multicellular pattern regulation by applying
techniques that the information sciences use to understand memory,
decision-making, representation, category inference, and goal-directed
behavior. This is a very out-of-the-box, multi-disciplinary project that
aims to go beyond the state of the art and establish a new quantitative
approach to regulative morphogenesis.

The ideal candidate will have not only solid hands-on expertise in the
above-mentioned computational techniques but will have a broad interest in,
and some knowledge of, computer science, cognitive science, AI, AL,
statistical dynamics, engineering (experience in biology is not required,
although would be helpful). Our goal is to develop novel theory and toy
models in a creative new approach to the fundamental and difficult problem
of biological pattern regulation.

The Levin Lab comprises expertise in molecular genetics, regenerative
biology, biophysics, and computer science and works at the boundary of a
number of related disciplines.
