CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

ICDL/Epirob 2014 WORKSHOP - Development of body representations in
humans and robots.

October 13, 2014 at Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy
Web site: http://www.icub.org/other/icdl-epirob-2014/dbr_workshop.html

============================================================

This workshop will take place in the afternoon of October 13, 2014 at
Palazzo Ducale (Genova - Italy) in the context of the 2014 IEEE
International Joint Conference on Development and Learning and on
Epigenetic Robotics (ICDL/Epirob 2014).

--== Motivation and objectives ==--

The goal of this workshop is to explore the possibility of robots
developing models inspired by the mechanisms of human body
representations. In this way, they can on one hand become new modeling
tools for empirical sciences – expanding the domain of computational
modeling by anchoring it to the physical environment and a physical
body. On the other hand, robot controllers endowed with multimodal
whole-body awareness and plasticity typical of humans should give rise
to – in robotics unprecedented – autonomy, robustness, and resilience.

--== Keynote speakers ==--

Prof. Jeffrey Lockman, PhD, Tulane University, USA
Kevin O’Regan, PhD, former Research Director, CNRS, Paris, France
Stuart Wilson, PhD, Lecturer, University of Sheffield, UK
Prof. Minoru Asada, PhD, Osaka University, Japan

--== Submission guidelines ==--

The workshop will feature a poster session. Prospective participants are
required to submit a short abstract (1 page in length), optionally
accompanied by a small video. Late-breaking and preliminary (but
promising!) results are encouraged. Submissions must be in pdf.

Send your manuscript (and optionally a small video) to
lorenzojamone at gmail.com, indicating [ICDL 2014 Body-Schema Workshop] in
the subject.

All submissions will be carefully reviewed by the workshop organizers,
for relevance to the topic of the workshop, as well as scientific merit.
Upon available time, a few selected contributions may have the
opportunity to be presented in the oral session as short talks. The
other selected contributions will be presented as posters during a
dedicated session. The authors will also have the opportunity to
introduce their posters with a 1-minute "teaser" oral presentation.

The participants are encouraged to include with their submission:
- 1 question to the invited speakers (and to the audience in general)
- Your personal definition of the concept of body schema.
Upon available time, (some of) those questions/answers will be used to
"drive" the final discussion.

--== Proceedings ==--
Accepted abstracts will be published on the workshop website. Depending
on the overall quality of the contributions, we might consider proposing
a Special Issue to a journal like the IEEE Transactions on Autonomous
Mental Development or Adaptive Behavior, in which extended versions of
the submitted manuscripts might be included.

--== Important dates ==--

September 7, 2014 : Submission deadline
September 15, 2014 : Notification of acceptance
October 13, 2014 : Workshop

--== Registration ==--

Participants will be expected to register for the ICDL/Epirob
conference, where they will be able to choose either whole-conference
registration (that includes the workshops) or workshops only.
