*Call for papers Artificial Life special issue on living technology*

Guest Editors: Mark A. Bedau and Emily C. Parke

This is an open call for papers for submission to a special issue of the
Artificial Life journal (MIT Press) on living technology. The issue will
consist of original papers that demonstrate important scientific and
technical progress on creating or understanding new and powerful forms of
living technology. Living technology is “technology that is based on the
powerful core features of life” (Bedau, McCaskill et al. 2010). Since
artificial life helps us to understand the fundamental properties of living
systems, it helps us to make technology more and more powerful because it is
more and more alive. This special issue mainly includes descriptions and
explanations of new significant achievements in living technology, but it
also includes new interpretations of previous results. Papers can come from
a wide variety of different perspectives on living technology (Bedau,
Hansen, et al. 2010). Also welcome are philosophical or interdisciplinary
papers and opinion pieces that evaluate the larger implications of living
technology, and attempt to reshape its role in society.

Authors of potential contributions to the special issue are encouraged to
contact Emily Parke (eparke at sas.upenn.edu) by the inquiry deadline to
guarantee full consideration.

Inquiry deadline: October 10th, 2011

Paper submission deadline: November 15th, 2011
