* September 10-12th, 2008 Conference days

SCOPE
----------

In recent years the field of metaheuristics has attracted an increased
interest from the research community, that has resulted in the development
of new algorithms and applications in new domains. Current research has
shown that the combination of different metaheuristic techniques, called
hybrid metaheuristics, can improve the performance of the algorithms,
specially when dealing with real-world applications.

There are many application domains where the use of hybrid metaheuristics
has shown to be an efficient alternative to standard methods. Real-world
domains like bioinformatics, robot path planning, data mining,
telecomunications, engineering, business, logistics, etc. have provided
several instances of successful applications of hybrid metaheuristics.
With this special session we aim at papers where hybrid metaheuristics
have been applied successfully to real-world or large-size domains.
Additionally, there are currently many possibilities for hybridization:
low-level vs. high-level, relay vs. co-evolutionary, homogeneous vs.
heterogeneous, global vs. partial, and general vs. specialist.
Therefore, papers that compare and analyse the performance of different
hybrid configurations on the same domain and new hybrid configurations
for specific domains are specially well suited for this session.
Theoretical justifications of why some form of hybridization works for
particular problems are also appropriate. Finally, practical experience
and guidance on selecting metaheuristics for particular problems, tuning
of parameters, automatic parameter setting, parameter interactions, etc
are of great interest for this session.

The scope of this session includes, but is not limited, to:
 * Successful applications of hybrid metaheuristcs in real-world domains
 * New application domains for hybrid metaheuristics
 * Hybrid metaheuristics in machine learning and data mining
 * Hybridization of metaheuristics and exact methods
 * Empirical comparisons of different metaheuristic configurations
 * Comparisons of hybrid metaheuristics and standard methods on real domains
 * Comparisons of hybrid and non-hybrid metaheuristics on real domains
 * Theoretical analysis of hybrid metaheuristics on actual problems
 * Parallel hybrid metaheuristics on real problems
 * Software tools and libraries for building hybrid metaheuristics
 * Multiobjective hybrid metaheuristics on real problems
 * New hybrid metaheuristics

PAPER SUBMISSION
---------------------------

Papers must be submitted no later than * May 31th, 2008** *and electronic
submission in PDF is required. The page limit for a full-length paper is
6 pages. All submissions should be in the IEEE 8.5 two-column format.
Papers should contain up to 5 keywords. Papers will be evaluated for
originality, significance, clarity, and soundness, and will be reviewed
by at least three independent reviewers from the program committe.

Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press
<http://www.computer.org/cspress>. Selected papers presented at the
session will be considered for publication in a special issue of an
international Journal.

It is assumed that all accepted manuscripts would be presented at
the conference. All accepted papers must be accompanied by a full
paid registration to appear in the proceedings. All full papers are
to be submitted in PDF electronically via the web site.
