Vacancynumber 1.2007.00151

The SOKS project (Self-Organising Knowledge Systems) combines two
different main streams in Artificial Intelligence research:
Computational Intelligence and Knowledge Representation.

Scientifically it amounts to applying bottom-up Computational
Intelligence techniques to solve the problem of creating shared
ontologies through emergence and self-organization.

One of the main challenges of this project is to build a bridge between
the Knowledge Representation and Computational Intelligence research
communities which, until now have lived almost entirely separate
lives. Separate conferences, separate journals, separate methodologies,
separate deployment areas. Recently there is an increasing awareness
that principles from self- organizing systems must be brought to bear on
KR systems.

Requirements

The candidate must have (or be about to have) a PhD in a relevant field
of Artificial Intelligence or related fields of Computer
Science. Scientific experience proven by international peer-reviewed
publications is required. Previous experience with Computational
Intelligence or Knowledge Representation would be considered as an
advantage. The ability to collaborate in a team is essential for this
position.

Location

The research will be carried out within the Computational Intelligence
Group and the Knowledge Representation Group which both are part of the
Artificial Intelligence Department at the Faculty of Sciences of the VU
University Amsterdam (see <http://www.cs.vu.nl/ai/kr/> and
<http://www.cs.vu.nl/ci/>).

Particularities

Salary depending on education and experience of the candidates, starting
at EUR 2.850,- gross per month (salary scale 10). The full-time
position starts September 2007. The position is funded for 3 years, with
possible extension of one year. You can find more information about our
fringe benefits of employment at www.vu.nl/vacatures.
