PhD Full-Time Scholarship ($23,868 pa tax-free) for 3 years

Scalable Evolutionary Computation

Location: School of ITEE, University of New South Wales @ ADFA, Canberra,
Australia

The candidate for this scholarship will join an active research team with a
strong focus on evolutionary computation, multi-agent systems, and complex
adaptive systems. The team consists of 5 full time academics and 15
researchers including PhD students.

Many real world problems have a large and complex search spaces.
Evolutionary computation techniques (EC) are uniquely characterized with
their ability to search in parallel in many directions simultaneously due to
their use of a population of solutions. The objective of this project is to
design a scalable EC technique using probabilistic models. Scientific
visualization techniques will be used extensively throughout the design and
working of this technique.

The successful applicant should have first-class honours or equivalent in
Computer Science, or other areas such as mathematics/statistics with a
strong programming skills preferably in C++ or JAVA. Applicants without an
honour degree should have a Masters degree.

Applications should include a detailed CV, a certified copy (do not send
originals) of academic transcripts and a cover letter detailing the
applicants' research interest and its relevance to the project. Email your
application to Dr. Michael Barlow (spike at adfa.edu.au) or Assoc Prof. Hussein
Abbass (abbass at itee.adfa.edu.au). First screening of applications will take
place on May 5, 2006.
