I have just released version 1.0 of a new artificial life simulator
entitled Nanopond. Nanopond is an attempt to create the smallest,
simplest "corewar style" (a.k.a. like Avida, Tierra, etc.) artificial
life simulator program possible. It's primary purpose is to serve as an
educational tool for programmers who are curious about how these systems
work.
Nanopond weighs in at only 847 lines of C code, the majority of which
are comments! It was written and tested under Linux, and anyone with a
bit of C programming knowhow should be able to get it up and running on
other operating systems as well. It is only available in source code
form at the moment.
For it's small size, Nanopond exhibits very rich evolutionary phenomena
including the progressive evolution of cell programs of higher and
higher complexity and the spontaneous emergence of self-replicating
cells from random initial conditions.
