Hello,

The Organic Builder applet now has four new challenge levels. Given a
world of simple components bouncing off each other, you specify the
rules of their interactions to build structures and implement
functionality.

The new levels are:

Level 16 presents you with a particle trapped inside a membrane. The
challenge is to grow the membrane using all available 'a' particles,
while keeping the 'f' particle trapped inside.

Level 17 presents you with something similar and requires you to design
reactions to transport particles across the membrane, without breaking
its structure.

In Level 18 you have to make reaction rules that cause the membrane to
divide into two equal loops.

Level 19 is tough. Given a membrane and a strip of 'genetic
information' inside, you have to copy the entire structure without
exposing any of its innards to a caustic particle that is outside.
Nobody has yet solved this level (but it is possible).

The Organic Builder is a bit of fun but also ties in with serious
academic work on evolvability and self-replication. More information at
the site above, and also at the Organic Builder mailing list:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/OrganicBuilder

Enjoy.
