Postdoc Opening at Sandia National Laboratories
Sandia National Laboratories' Physical and Chemical Sciences Center is
spearheading a new research thrust in dynamic self-assembly. We seek a
creative and interdisciplinary scientist and/or software developer to join
the existing two-member team to strengthen and grow this new thrust. The
position will involve designing, implementing, testing, and documenting
software in the Forth programming language, in a team software development
effort. However, the focus of the individual's activities is flexible,
depending on the individual's experience and interests. Activities include:
(1) developing agent-based software simulations of protein networks, to
design novel self-assembling materials or structures, and working with
experimental biologists to design experiments based on the outcomes of the
simulations; (2) exploring self-assembly "algorithms" (via computer
simulation) that result in the emergence of hierarchical,
self-reconfiguring, self-repairing structures/systems; (3) developing a new
self-assembling software technology (programming language), and evolutionary
programming scheme based on this technology.

REQUIRED:
An advanced degree in physics, biology, biochemistry, computer science, or a
related field is required. A willingness to develop software in the Forth
programming language is also required. The successful candidate will be
comfortable working with a highly interdisciplinary team, involving
expertise in statistical physics, information/computer science and
biological systems, and have demonstrated the ability to come "up to speed"
quickly on new fields outside his/her area of expertise. The successful
candidate must also be comfortable in a high-risk, "out of the box" research
mode. U.S. Citizenship required. Equal Opportunity Employer. M/F/D/V

DESIRED:
A candidate with education or work experience in all three of the areas of
physics, biology, and computer/information science is particularly desired.
A minimum of three years of software development experience, demonstrated
ability to develop software both independently and as part of a team,
experience in developing and testing agent-based simulations, and experience
with the Forth programming language are also desired.

IMPORANT DATES:
We would like to make a hiring decision by the end of June 2004, so CV
should be submitted as soon as possible. The start date is negotiable, but
we would prefer the postdoc to start in the summer or fall of 2004.
