  ==================================

       Second Call for papers on

   **    Dynamical Hierarchies.    **

   Special Issue of Artificial Life.

   ==================================

Submission Deadline:  September 5, 2003

Guest Editors: Dominique Chu, Tom Lenaerts, Richard Watson
Editor-in-Chief: Mark Bedau

A "dynamical hierarchy" is a natural or artificial dynamical system
exhibiting multiple levels of nested subcomponent structures. The
components at each level, their properties, and the modes of
interaction between them, all result from the ongoing interactions
between the components of lower levels. Despite the ubiquity of
dynamical hierarchies in natural systems, especially living systems,
there are currently few explicit realizations of dynamical hierarchies
in artificial life research. Given the importance of dynamical
hierarchies for understanding and simulating living systems we
invite submissions for a special issue of Artificial Life on this
subject.

Important Dates:
Receipt of submissions: September 5, 2003.
Notif. of accept./reject.: November 3, 2003.
Final manuscripts due: December 1, 2003.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

* Creation of multi-level dynamical hierarchies in computational
simulation.
* Creation of dynamical hierarchies in vitro.
* Description and analysis of dynamical hierarchies in real systems
(biological, social, economic,...).
* Exploration of the connection between dynamical hierarchies and
modularity, development, and evolution.
* Formal descriptions and categorizations of dynamical hierarchies.
* Philosophical and conceptual analysis of dynamical hierarchies.
* Critical and synthetic reviews of the state of the art on dynamical
hierarchies.
* Practical applications of dynamical hierarchies
